It may look like basic arithmetic, but the real challenge is noticing that the cows—or other symbols—can change between the earlier equations and the final line.

Ask yourself:

• Is the number of cows the same in every picture?
• Has one cow been removed or added?
• Are there different types or sizes of cows?
• Does the final equation contain exactly the same symbols as the earlier equations?
• Are there hidden visual changes that affect the value?

These puzzles are designed to reward careful observation rather than fast calculation.

A useful strategy

Start by assigning a value to each repeated symbol.

For example, if:

then each identical cow would represent 10.

Next, use the second equation to determine the value of any additional object.
