The Hoodie

The Hoodie
The Hoodie

My twelve-year-old daughter came home after spending the afternoon with my mother-in-law wearing an enormous hoodie pulled tightly over her head.

The moment she walked through the door, I knew something was wrong.

“Sweetheart?” I said.

She wouldn’t look at me.

“Where did you get that hoodie?”

She shrugged.

“Grandma gave it to me.”

My mother-in-law had never given my daughter clothes without telling me. And something about the way my daughter kept pulling the hood lower made my stomach tighten.

I stepped closer.

“Can I see your face?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

That one word scared me more than anything else.

I crouched beside her.

“You’re not in trouble. Whatever happened, you can tell me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

Finally, she whispered, “Mom, please don’t make me take it off.”

I reached for her hand.

“Why?”

She looked toward the front door as if she were afraid someone might be standing outside.

“Because Grandma said you would be angry.”

“Angry about what?”

My daughter slowly loosened the hood.

There was a bruise near her hairline.

I froze.

“Who did this?”

She immediately started crying.

“Grandma didn’t do it.”

I pulled her into my arms.

“Then who did?”

She hesitated.

Then she whispered six words that made my entire body go cold.

“Mom… Grandma told me not to tell you.”

I held her tighter and called my mother-in-law.

She answered on the first ring.

Before I could speak, she said:

“You need to listen to me very carefully.”

Then the line went dead.

A minute later, someone knocked on our front door.

And when I looked through the window, I saw my mother-in-law standing outside.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was standing beside a man I had never seen before.

And my daughter recognized him immediately.
