My Twin Sister Died Ten Years Ago — Then a Dentist Called

Ten years ago, I lost my twin sister in a terrible car accident.

It was the kind of loss that changed everything. Even after a decade, there were still moments when I caught myself thinking about calling her, telling her something funny, or asking her advice. I had learned to live with the emptiness, even though I never truly stopped missing her.

Then, last Monday, something happened that turned my entire world upside down.

My phone rang. The caller ID showed a local dentist’s office.

I answered, expecting a routine question or perhaps a wrong number.

Instead, the receptionist said something that made my blood run cold.

“Are you [name]? We were told you’re the person to contact. Your sister is here, and her phone has died. Could you come pick her up?”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

“My sister?” I finally asked.

“Yes,” she replied. “She said you’re her twin.”

My hands started shaking.

That was impossible.

My twin sister had been dead for ten years.

Yet someone at that dental office was insisting that a woman claiming to be my sister was sitting in their waiting room.

I drove there in a daze, trying to convince myself there had to be some explanation—a cruel coincidence, a mistaken identity, anything.

But when I walked through the door and saw the woman sitting in the chair…

I stopped breathing.

She looked exactly like my sister.

Not similar.

Not vaguely familiar.

Exactly like her.

And then she looked up at me and said the one thing only my twin sister could possibly have known.

That was when I realized this wasn’t a simple case of mistaken identity.

Someone had been hiding the truth from me for ten years.
