🚨 If You Start to Suffocate and You’re Alone: What to Do to Save Your Life
Choking can become life-threatening within minutes. If you’re alone and suddenly cannot breathe, speak, or cough forcefully, acting immediately is critical.
The good news is that there is an established first-aid technique you can use when nobody else is there to help. 🫁
⚠️ First, Recognize Severe Choking
If you can still cough forcefully or speak, keep coughing. A strong cough may clear the obstruction.
But if you cannot breathe, speak, or produce an effective cough, treat it as a severe choking emergency.
📞 Call Emergency Services
If possible, call your local emergency number immediately. Put the phone on speaker so you can continue first aid while help is being dispatched.
If you’re in Pakistan, the appropriate emergency number can vary by service and location; Rescue 1122 operates in many areas. If you’re elsewhere, use your local emergency number.
🫱 The Self-Abdominal-Thrust Technique
If you’re conscious and severely choking while alone, you can perform abdominal thrusts on yourself.
1. Make a fist
Place one fist just above your belly button and below your breastbone.
2. Grab your fist
Wrap your other hand firmly around the fist.
3. Thrust inward and upward
Pull your hands forcefully inward and upward.
Repeat thrusts until the object comes out or you become unable to continue.
🪑 You Can Also Use a Firm Edge
If you cannot generate enough force with your hands, you can use the edge of a sturdy, blunt object, such as the back of a heavy chair.
Position the upper abdomen against the edge—above the belly button and below the breastbone—and drive your body inward and upward against it.
⚠️ Do not use a sharp corner or anything that could cause additional injury.
❌ Don’t Do These Things
If you’re choking severely:
- Don’t waste time drinking water.
- Don’t blindly put your fingers into your mouth trying to find the object.
- Don’t lie down and wait for it to pass.
- Don’t assume the obstruction will resolve on its own if you cannot breathe.
🫁 What If You Become Unconscious?
If you lose consciousness, you can no longer perform self-rescue. This is why calling emergency services as early as possible is so important.
If another person arrives and you are unconscious, they should begin appropriate CPR and follow emergency-dispatch instructions.
👶 Important: Children and Pregnant People Are Different
The technique for infants and young children is different, and abdominal thrusts aren’t appropriate in the same way for everyone.
Pregnant people and people with significant abdominal or chest conditions may also require modified techniques.
If you are helping someone else who is choking, follow instructions from emergency services or a trained first-aid provider.
❤️ Remember This
If you’re choking and alone:
📞 Call emergency services → cough forcefully if you can → if you cannot breathe/speak/cough effectively, perform repeated self-abdominal thrusts → keep going until the obstruction clears or you become unconscious.
Choking is frightening, but knowing what to do before it happens can make a crucial difference.
If you’re interested in first aid, consider taking a certified CPR and choking-response course. Hands-on training is the best way to become confident with these techniques. 🫶
