Before astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth in 1962, NASA had begun relying on increasingly sophisticated electronic computers to calculate spacecraft trajectories.
But Glenn wanted one thing before trusting the new technology.
He reportedly asked NASA to have Johnson personally verify the computer’s calculations.
Johnson spent roughly a day and a half checking the numbers by hand using a mechanical calculator.
Her conclusion?
The trajectory was correct.
Glenn then went ahead with the historic mission. ๐
๐ Her Contributions Went Far Beyond One Mission
Johnson’s work extended well beyond verifying Glenn’s flight path.
She contributed to trajectory calculations for Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 mission, Glenn’s orbital flight, and later the Apollo 11 mission, which carried humans to the Moon.
She also co-authored a NASA research paper on spacecraft trajectoryโan extraordinary accomplishment during an era when women, particularly Black women, were often excluded from opportunities in scientific research.
For 33 years, Johnson continued working at NASA before retiring in 1986.

For decades, much of Johnson’s groundbreaking work remained unfamiliar to the wider public.
That changed dramatically in her later years.
In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to the United States and its space program.
Her story later reached an even wider audience through the book and film Hidden Figures, which highlighted Johnson and fellow mathematicians Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.
