❤️ He Lost His Career for a Student—And Gained a Son
It started with something incredibly ordinary.
A teacher said hello to a student in the hallway.
Neither of them could have known that a simple act of kindness would eventually cost the teacher his career—and change both of their lives forever.
Rob Burnside spent 27 years at Lakota East High School near Cincinnati, first as a founding teacher and later as principal.
During his junior year, student Landerius “DeDe” Hayes was living without a stable home. His situation was unsafe and uncertain, and sometimes he slept in the family car simply to stay warm.
Then the school district discovered that Hayes’s mother had moved outside the school’s boundaries.
A letter was sent ordering Hayes to withdraw.
Burnside could have simply followed the rules.
Instead, he started asking questions.
He spoke with his wife, Angel, and together they made a decision that would change everything.
They offered Hayes a place in their home.
Burnside also continued allowing him to attend classes, even though doing so went against district policy.
Eventually, the district found out.
Burnside was given a choice: resign or face termination.
He chose to resign.
Hayes tried to convince him to reconsider. He even offered to return to his mother’s home if it meant Burnside could keep his job.
But Burnside refused.
“No,” he told him. “You’re gonna stay with me.”
Nearly two years later, Hayes doesn’t simply think of Burnside as the teacher who helped him.
He calls him Dad. 🥹❤️
This year, Hayes graduated, and the man who sacrificed his career to give him a safe place to live was there in the stands, watching proudly.
A career can be rebuilt.
A title can be replaced.
But giving a young person a safe place when they desperately need one can change the course of an entire life.
When Burnside was asked whether he regretted his decision, his answer was simple:
He doesn’t.
Because sometimes, the most important thing you can accomplish in a career isn’t found on a résumé.
It’s found in the life of someone who can finally say,
