🌊 Google Maps Makes a Major Change: Lake Ontario Is Now “Lake America” for U.S. Users

Google Maps has begun displaying “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario” for users in the United States, following President Donald Trump’s executive order directing the U.S. government to adopt the new name.

But there’s an important detail:

The name hasn’t changed everywhere.

For people using Google Maps in the United States, the lake is now labeled Lake America.

Google says the change reflects the updated U.S. Geographic Names Information System, which is used as a source for geographic names displayed on its maps.

The move follows the same approach Google used after the U.S. government changed its federal designation for the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America.”

🇨🇦 Canada Still Says “Lake Ontario”

Cross the border into Canada, however, and the name remains Lake Ontario.

Google has said Canadian users will continue seeing the traditional name, while users in other parts of the world may see both names.

That’s because a U.S. executive order can determine how the U.S. government refers to a geographic feature, but it doesn’t automatically change what other countries call it.

And that’s where the controversy begins.

Lake Ontario has carried its familiar name for centuries and is shared by the United States and Canada.
