3 Baking Soda Recipes to Burn Belly Fat

Posted on May 2, 2026 by foodiefusion

While baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a household staple, it is important to clarify a medical fact: Baking soda does not directly burn fat. There is no scientific evidence that consuming it triggers thermogenesis or dissolves adipose tissue.

However, many people use these recipes to help with digestion and alkalizing the body, which can reduce bloating and make your midsection appear flatter.

If you want to try these “tonic” recipes, here are three popular combinations used in holistic wellness:

1. The Lemon & Baking Soda “Alkalizer”

This is the most popular version. Lemon juice is thought to boost metabolism, while baking soda neutralizes excess stomach acid.

  • Ingredients: 1 glass of lukewarm water, juice of half a lemon, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda.

  • Preparation: Mix the lemon juice and baking soda first (it will fizz), then add the water.

  • Best time: Drink on an empty stomach in the morning.

2. The Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Flush

ACV is widely studied for its ability to help manage blood sugar levels, which can indirectly help prevent fat storage.

  • Ingredients: 1 glass of water, 2 tablespoons of ACV, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda.

  • Preparation: Combine the ACV and baking soda in the glass, let the reaction settle, then fill with water.

  • Best time: About 20 minutes before a heavy meal to aid digestion.

3. Green Tea & Baking Soda Booster

Green tea contains catechins (antioxidants) that are scientifically linked to increased fat oxidation.

  • Ingredients: 1 cup of brewed green tea (cooled slightly) and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.

  • Preparation: Brew your green tea as usual. Once it is drinkable but still warm, stir in the baking soda.

  • Best time: Mid-afternoon for a metabolic boost.

⚠️ Important Health Warnings

Before adding baking soda to your daily routine, keep these safety points in mind:

  1. High Sodium: Baking soda is very high in sodium. If you have high blood pressure or heart issues, avoid these drinks as they can cause fluid retention and spike blood pressure.

  2. Stomach pH: Your stomach needs acid to digest food. Drinking too much baking soda can neutralize that acid, leading to poor digestion and nutrient malabsorption over time.

  3. The “Rebound” Effect: Overusing baking soda can actually cause your body to produce more acid to compensate, leading to more bloating and discomfort.

  4. Consult a Professional: Always check with a doctor if you are on medication, as baking soda can interfere with how your body absorbs certain drugs.
