I came home to visit my elderly mother, but when I offered to help bathe her, she shrank back in terror.

Judge Thorne was silent for three seconds.

Then he asked one question.

“Is your mother in immediate danger?”

I looked at her.

She was sitting on the closed toilet lid, wrapped in a towel, her bruised wrists trembling in her lap.

“Yes,” I said.

“Then don’t go downstairs. Don’t confront your brother. Don’t warn anyone. Stay with her.”

“I understand.”

“I’ll have an emergency order prepared. I’m also contacting the county sheriff and adult protective services.”

I ended the call.

For the first time that day, my mother exhaled.

“Are they coming?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“Thank God.”

I squeezed her hand.

“Mom, we’re getting you out of here.”

Then we heard footsteps in the hallway.

Julian.

I quickly put the phone in my pocket.

“Mom, listen to me. Whatever happens, don’t be afraid.”

The bathroom door rattled.

“Mom?”

Julian’s voice.

“What are you two doing in there?”

My mother immediately started shaking.

I stood between her and the door.

“I’m helping her bathe.”

“Open the door.”

I didn’t answer.

His voice became sharper.

“Open the door, Elena.”

I looked at my mother’s wrists.

Then at the door.

“No.”

Silence.

Then Julian laughed.

A cold, nervous laugh.

“You’ve been here less than a day and you’re already causing problems.”

I heard Chloe behind him.

“Tell her to leave, Julian.”

Then came the sound of a vehicle stopping outside.

Another.

Then another.

Julian stopped talking.

I heard the front door open.

A man’s voice called from downstairs.

“Julian Hale?”

My brother didn’t answer.

The voice came again.

“County Sheriff’s Office. We need everyone to remain where they are.”

Chloe screamed.

“What is happening?”

I opened the bathroom door.

Julian stood frozen in the hallway.

Two deputies were behind him.

And behind them was an adult protective services investigator holding a folder.

Julian looked at me.

His face went pale.

“You called the police?”

“No.”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“I called the people who can actually protect Mom.”

One of the deputies stepped forward.

“Mr. Hale, step away from the door.”

Julian didn’t move.

“You don’t understand,” he said. “My mother is mentally unstable.”

The investigator looked at my mother.

Then at the bruises visible above her towel.

“Mrs. Hale, did your son cause these injuries?”

My mother looked at Julian.

For years, she had been afraid of him.

But this time she didn’t look away.

“Yes.”

Julian’s expression collapsed.

“Mom!”

She flinched.

The deputy immediately stepped between them.

“Don’t approach her.”

Chloe started crying.

“This is ridiculous! Those bruises could be from anything!”

I calmly opened my phone.

“I have photographs.”

Then I showed them the recordings.

The investigator listened.

Her expression hardened with every sentence.

When the recording ended, she looked at Julian.

“Where are your mother’s financial records?”

Julian swallowed.

“I manage her finances legally.”

“Then you won’t mind showing us the accounts.”

He didn’t answer.

The investigator repeated the question.

“Where are the accounts?”

Chloe suddenly spoke.

“They’re private.”

The investigator looked at her.

“Not when there are allegations of financial exploitation.”

That sentence changed the atmosphere.

Because Julian knew something.

Something he desperately didn’t want them to discover.

The deputies searched the office.

Within minutes, they found the old filing cabinet.

Inside were bank statements.

Property documents.

A recently signed will.

And a stack of checks.

The investigator spread them across the desk.

“Mrs. Hale?”

My mother walked slowly into the room.

The investigator held up one check.

“Did you authorize this payment?”

Mom looked at it.

“No.”

Another.

“No.”

Another.

“No.”

Then she saw a check for $18,000.

Her face changed.

“That was my money for my surgery.”

I turned toward Julian.

“You told her there wasn’t enough money.”

Julian said nothing.

The investigator kept examining the documents.

Then she found the deed for the lake cabin.

She looked at my mother.

“Did you knowingly sell this property?”

“No.”

“Did you receive any money from the sale?”

“No.”

The room went silent.

The investigator turned toward Julian.

“Who received the proceeds?”

Julian’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Chloe suddenly grabbed his arm.

“Julian, don’t say anything.”

One deputy immediately noticed.

“Ma’am, step over here.”

Chloe released him.

But it was too late.

The investigator had already seen the fear in her eyes.

Then she found something inside the bottom drawer.

A small black notebook.

She opened it.

Every payment was listed.

Groceries.

Medication.

Utilities.

But beneath those were completely different entries.

Designer handbag.

Luxury resort.

Jewelry.

Restaurant.

New car.

All paid from my mother’s accounts.

My mother stared at the pages.

“I was told we couldn’t afford my medicine.”

I put my arm around her.

“You can now.”

Then Julian suddenly shouted,

“You don’t know anything about what I’ve done!”

Everyone went silent.

He looked at me.

“You think I wanted this?”

“What are you talking about?”

His breathing became uneven.

“I had no choice.”

The investigator frowned.

“No choice to steal your mother’s money?”

Julian shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

He looked toward Chloe.

She looked terrified.

Then he whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to live long enough for anyone to find out.”

My mother’s face went white.

I felt every hair on my arms rise.

“What did you just say?”

Julian realized what he had admitted.

He stepped backward.

The deputy grabbed his arm.

But Julian kept staring at my mother.

Then he said the words that made the entire room freeze.

“Mom wasn’t the real target.”

He looked at me.

“You were.”

And Chloe suddenly began screaming.

“Julian, shut up!”

The investigator turned toward her.

“Why?”

Chloe started crying.

Because whatever Julian had just revealed…

was only the beginning.
