*I SAVED THE LIFE OF THE CRIME LORD WHO ABANDONED ME SIX YEARS AGO—THEN HE OPENED HIS EYES AND SAW THE WOMAN HE NEVER KNEW WAS CARRYING HIS CHILD*

His fingers twitched against the bloody sheet, and his cracked lips parted into a ragged whisper.

“Elena…?”

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t afford to break.

“Push two milligrams of epinephrine, now!” I commanded, slamming my gloved palms over the central wound to stem the arterial bleed. “Get him straight to Trauma Bay 1! We’re opening him up!”

For three agonizing hours under the sterile, blinding lights of the operating room, I fought the grim reaper for Dante Moretti’s life. I pulled bullet fragments from his abdomen, clamped bleeding arteries, and stitched torn tissue with precision born of desperation. My hands remained cold and steady, even as my mind raced back six years—to the quiet mornings in our tiny apartment, to the abrupt silence of the night he abandoned me, and to our five-year-old daughter, Chloe, who was currently asleep at home with my neighbor.

By 4:30 a.m., his vitals had finally stabilized.

I stepped out into the hallway, pulling off my bloody surgical gloves, every muscle in my body trembling from exhaustion. Standing outside the ICU double doors were four towering men in dark, tailored suits—Dante’s security detail. They moved like shadows, their hands resting inside their jackets.

The tallest one, a man with a scarred jaw named Marcus, stepped forward. “Is he going to make it?”

“He’s stable,” I said, keeping my voice clipped and professional. “The next twenty-four hours are critical, but he survived the surgery.”

Marcus gave a sharp nod. “No one enters his room except you, Doctor. The men who did this are still looking for him.”

I didn’t argue. I retreated to my private office, collapsed into my chair, and stared at the framed photograph on my desk. In it, little Chloe was laughing under a bright yellow raincoat, her big brown eyes staring back at me—the exact double of the man lying in ICU Bed 4.

At 7:00 a.m., I walked into his room to check his vitals.

The heart monitor hummed rhythmically. Dante was awake. His heavy eyelids lifted as I walked to the side of his bed, his dark eyes tracking my every movement.

“You saved me,” his voice was rough, barely more than a gravelly rasp.

“It’s my job, Mr. Moretti,” I said flatly, checking his IV drip without making eye contact.

“Elena… don’t call me that,” he breathed, reaching out a hand wired with monitors to gently catch the cuff of my lab coat. “Six years ago… I had to leave. My uncle took over the family… he threatened to execute anyone I loved. I left to keep you alive.”

“You left a note, Dante,” I said, looking down at him as six years of anger welled up in my throat. “You left a note on a kitchen counter and vanished into thin air. You didn’t ask what I wanted. You made a choice for both of us.”

“I did it to protect you!” he choked out, his chest heaving as the heart monitor beeped rapidly. “I spent six years tearing my family apart from the inside so I could finally make it safe to come back to you—”

He stopped abruptly.

His eyes had drifted past my face, landing on the small wooden desk across the room where my coat and leather bag were resting. Next to my bag was my phone—its lock screen illuminated by a new notification.

It was a photo sent by my neighbor, showing Chloe sitting at the kitchen table eating pancakes, holding up a drawing of a family under a rainbow.

Dante’s breath hitched. He stared at the screen, then looked up at me, his eyes wide with a sudden, overwhelming realization. He looked at the girl’s dark curls, her round face, and the undeniable shape of his own eyes staring out from the digital display.

“Elena…” Dante’s voice broke completely, tears glistening in the corners of his eyes for the first time in his ruthless life. “Who… who is that?”

I stood tall beside his bed, taking a slow, steady breath.

“That’s Chloe,” I said softly, the truth hanging heavy in the quiet room. “And she has been waiting six years to find out who her father is.”

Dante closed his eyes as a single tear slipped down his cheek. The most feared crime lord in Seattle was helpless, pinned to a hospital bed, forced to realize that while he was busy fighting his wars, the best part of his life had been growing up without him.

“I won’t let anyone touch either of you again,” he whispered, opening his eyes with a cold, terrifying resolve that proved the king had returned. “I swear it on my life, Elena. They tried to kill me last night… but now I have a reason to burn them all to the ground.”
