I Woke Up After Surgery to an Empty Hospital Room
I woke up after surgery to an empty hospital room.
For a few seconds, I didn’t know where I was.
The ceiling lights were too bright. My throat was dry, and there was a dull ache spreading through my body.
Then I remembered.
The surgery.
My children.
Before the anesthesia, I’d been told they would be waiting for me when I woke up.
I turned my head toward the door.
Nobody was there.
I pressed the call button.
A nurse came in a few minutes later.
“Where are my children?” I asked.
She stopped.
It was only for a second, but I noticed.
That hesitation made my stomach tighten.
“Where are my children?” I repeated.
The nurse looked at the chart in her hands.
“They aren’t here right now.”
“Why not?”
She hesitated again.
Then she pulled a chair beside my bed.
“I think there’s something you need to know.”
My heart began pounding.
“What happened?”
She lowered her voice.
“Your children were brought to the hospital earlier. But they didn’t come to this room.”
I stared at her.
“Where did they go?”
She looked toward the hallway before answering.
“Your husband came for them.”
Everything inside me went cold.
“He came here?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The nurse didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she reached into the drawer beside my bed and handed me a folded piece of paper.
“It was left for you.”
My hands trembled as I opened it.
There were only seven words written inside:
“Don’t trust the person you married.”
I read the sentence twice.
Then a third time.
And suddenly, the empty room didn’t feel empty anymore.
It felt like the beginning of something much worse.
