My Son and I Secretly Got on My Pilot Husband’s Flight to Surprise Him
— Then He Said Something Over the Speakers That Made Us Both Stop Smiling
My husband Weston has been a commercial pilot for almost nine years. Our seven-year-old son Milo had never once flown on a plane his dad was flying.
He asked constantly. “Are you flying a big one today?” “Do the passengers know you’re my dad?”
A few weeks ago, Weston mentioned a short Saturday flight home before dinner. That gave me an idea.
I bought two tickets without telling him. Milo packed his headphones, some gummy bears, and a drawing labeled “BEST PILOT EVER” in giant crooked letters.
Getting through the airport unseen was harder than expected. At one point Milo grabbed my sleeve. “Mom. MOM.”
Weston was thirty feet away. I dragged Milo into a gift shop and pretended to love refrigerator magnets until he disappeared.
We finally boarded, found our seats in the back. “Do you think Dad knows?”
“No chance.”
The cabin door closed. The speakers crackled. Weston’s voice filled the plane.
Milo’s whole face lit up. “That’s him.”
He welcomed everyone aboard, made his usual corny joke.
Then he stopped.
“Actually, folks, before we leave, I need to say something a little different today.”
His voice sounded serious. Not nervous. Just serious.
“There is a very special person on this plane tonight. Someone who means absolutely everything to me.”
Milo spun toward me, eyes huge.
“He knows!”
I started to rise, expecting him to say my name.
Then he kept talking.
And the moment I heard who he was actually talking about, I sank back into my seat and felt every drop of blood drain from my face.
