Jason stared at me as if I had suddenly become a stranger.
The woman beside him looked from me to the papers scattered across the glass table.
Then she slowly removed her hand from Jason’s arm.
“Who is she?” she whispered.
Jason didn’t answer.
That was the first mistake.
The second was looking at the bank statements instead of looking at me.
“Emma,” he finally said.
My name sounded different coming from his mouth.
Smaller.
Almost pleading.
“What are you doing here?”
I smiled.
“I live here.”
His face drained of color.
“No, you don’t.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Not here, apparently. But according to the mortgage documents, you thought I would eventually.”
He took one step toward the table.
I immediately lifted one finger.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
For the first time in our fourteen-year marriage, Jason actually obeyed me without arguing.
The woman beside him looked increasingly uncomfortable.
“Jason,” she said quietly, “what is she talking about?”
He turned toward her.
“Claire, just go.”
Claire.
So that was her name.
I had seen it dozens of times in the messages.
But hearing it aloud made something inside me strangely calm.
Claire looked at him.
Then at me.
Then back at him.
“You told me she knew.”
I almost laughed.
Jason closed his eyes.
“Claire—”
“You said your marriage was over.”
“It is complicated.”
“No,” I interrupted.
“It isn’t.”
I picked up the first document from the table.
“This is your mortgage application.”
I placed it down.
“This is the transfer from our joint investment account.”
Another document.
“This is the company you created to hide ownership.”
Another.
“And this…”
I slid a printed email toward him.
“…is the message where you told Claire the apartment would be hers once the divorce was finalized.”
Claire’s mouth fell open.
Jason looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
That distinction mattered.
Because guilty people regret what they did.
Terrified people regret getting caught.
“Emma,” he whispered, “you don’t understand.”
I stood.
“I understand everything.”
“No. You don’t.”
He stepped closer.
“You’re looking at transactions without knowing why they happened.”
“Then explain them.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I smiled.
“That’s what I thought.”
Claire suddenly reached for her handbag.
“I need to leave.”
Jason grabbed her wrist.
“Wait.”
She pulled away.
“You told me she was unstable.”
My smile disappeared.
“You told her I was unstable?”
Jason said nothing.
Claire looked at him with disgust.
“You told me she was obsessed with money. That she controlled everything. That you were basically trapped.”
I stared at my husband.
Then something clicked.
He hadn’t simply cheated.
He had created two versions of reality.
One where I was the controlling wife keeping him from happiness.
Another where Claire was the woman he supposedly loved enough to abandon everything for.
And somehow, he had convinced both of us that the other woman was the problem.
I slowly nodded.
“That explains a lot.”
Jason looked desperate now.
“Emma, please.”
“Please what?”
“I can explain.”
“No.”
I walked toward the kitchen island and picked up the bottle of wine he had purchased.
“You’ve had eight months to explain.”
I placed it back down.
“Tonight I’m listening.”
He stared at me.
“What?”
I pointed toward the chair opposite mine.
“Sit.”
He hesitated.
Then he sat.
Claire remained standing.
I looked at her.
“You can sit too.”
She didn’t.
“I don’t know what to believe.”
“Neither did I.”
I reached into my handbag and removed a small black folder.
“This is why I invited you both here.”
Jason frowned.
“I didn’t invite you,” I said to Claire. “But I knew you’d come.”
She looked confused.
“How?”
I opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Not of Claire.
Not of Jason.
A photograph of another woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Standing outside a private clinic in Manhattan.
Claire stared at it.
“Who is that?”
Jason suddenly stood.
“No.”
The word came out so sharply that Claire flinched.
I looked at him.
“You recognize her.”
His face had gone completely white.
I placed the photograph on the table.
“Her name is Victoria Hale.”
Claire looked at Jason.
“Who is Victoria?”
Jason said nothing.
I answered for him.
“She is the woman who owns sixty percent of the medical group Jason has been secretly trying to buy.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“What?”
I turned another page.
“And she is also the person who transferred one hundred fifty thousand dollars into the shell company that purchased this apartment.”
Jason’s chair scraped violently against the floor.
“Where did you get that?”
I smiled.
“From the account you forgot existed.”
He stared at me.
“What account?”
“The one you opened three years ago.”
His expression changed.
He knew exactly which one.
The secret account.
The account he had always denied existed.
I continued.
“You didn’t use our money because you wanted to buy Claire a home.”
Claire stared at him.
“Then why?”
I looked directly into Jason’s eyes.
“Because this apartment wasn’t really for Claire.”
Silence.
Jason swallowed.
“It was a holding property.”
“For what?” Claire whispered.
I placed the final document on the table.
A purchase agreement.
Then I said the words that made Jason’s entire body stiffen.
“For the company you’re planning to steal from your own partners.”
Claire stepped backward.
Jason’s face hardened.
“You’ve been investigating me.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I’ve been investigating my husband.”
I walked closer.
“And unfortunately, I discovered Jason Mercer never existed.”
He stared at me.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the man I married was an illusion.”
I pointed toward the documents.
“The real Jason has been moving money through shell companies, falsifying partnership records, hiding assets, and preparing to blame me for the missing funds when the investigation begins.”
His silence answered everything.
Claire covered her mouth.
“You were going to blame her?”
Jason turned toward her.
“Claire, you need to understand—”
“No.”
Her voice trembled.
“You were going to make your wife take the blame?”
Jason stepped toward her.
“It’s not what you think.”
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the apartment.
Jason stood perfectly still.
I didn’t react.
Claire grabbed her handbag.
“I don’t ever want to see you again.”
She walked toward the door.
Jason didn’t follow.
Because he was
