I LOST MY FIFTH BABY AFTER MY HUSBAND LEFT ME FOR MY YOUNGER SISTER

Her voice was shaking.

“Please don’t panic.”

I immediately sat up.

“What happened?”

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered,

“Amelia just walked into the middle of the wedding ceremony.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She has a microphone.”

I could hear people talking loudly in the background.

“What is she doing?”

My cousin took a shaky breath.

“She asked the priest to stop.”

I stood up.

“Why?”

“I don’t know. But she’s holding something.”

“What?”

“A piece of paper.”

My stomach tightened.

“Put me on speaker.”

“I can’t. Just listen.”

Then I heard my cousin whisper,

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

“She just said something.”

“What did she say?”

My cousin’s voice cracked.

“She said, ‘My dad can’t marry Aunt Claire.’”

I froze.

Claire was my younger sister.

My own sister.

The woman who had stolen my husband.

“What happened next?”

My cousin lowered her voice.

“Your mother tried to take the microphone away from her.”

My hands began trembling.

“And?”

“Amelia pulled away.”

I could hear shouting in the background.

Then Amelia’s small voice came through the phone.

Clear.

Calm.

And completely unlike the frightened little girl I had expected.

“My mom told me I wasn’t supposed to tell anyone,” she said.

My blood ran cold.

“Tell anyone what?”

My cousin whispered,

“She’s reading the paper.”

I heard Amelia say:

“Dad told Grandma that Mom would never find out.”

A terrible silence followed.

Then Amelia continued.

“But I found the recording.”

I stopped breathing.

“What recording?”

My cousin didn’t answer.

Instead, I heard a man’s voice faintly in the background.

Ryan.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Amelia replied,

“You lied to Mom.”

Ryan shouted,

“Give me that!”

My cousin gasped.

“He’s trying to take it from her.”

I grabbed my car keys.

“I’m coming.”

“Wait!”

“I don’t care what happens. I’m coming.”

“You need to hear this first.”

I stopped.

“What?”

My cousin’s voice became barely audible.

“Amelia says the recording proves your sister knew about the baby.”

I felt sick.

“What do you mean?”

“She says Claire knew you were pregnant.”

I couldn’t speak.

My sister had known.

Of course she’d known.

But then why—

My cousin suddenly whispered,

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“She says Ryan told Claire that if anything happened to the baby, you would blame yourself.”

My legs nearly gave out.

“What?”

Then my cousin said the words that shattered whatever remained of my trust in my family.

“Amelia says your sister knew Ryan was planning to leave you before you lost the baby.”

I pressed a hand over my mouth.

“No…”

“And she says Ryan told Claire something else.”

“What?”

My cousin hesitated.

“He told Claire that he didn’t want five children.”

I closed my eyes.

The baby I’d lost.

The child I’d already loved.

The child whose room I had been planning.

The child I had mourned every night.

My cousin continued.

“But Amelia says that’s not the worst part.”

“What could possibly be worse?”

“She says she found another recording.”

My heart pounded.

“What recording?”

“The one where Ryan was talking to your mother.”

My entire body went cold.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“About what?”

My cousin didn’t answer immediately.

Then I heard Amelia’s voice again.

“Grandma knew.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“She knew what?”

My cousin whispered,

“She knew about Ryan and Claire before you did.”

I couldn’t move.

My mother.

The woman who had come to my house that morning.

The woman who had screamed at me for refusing to attend the wedding.

The woman who had called me a terrible sister.

She had known.

But there was something else Amelia hadn’t told me yet.

My cousin suddenly said,

“She’s holding up another piece of paper.”

“What does it say?”

My cousin began crying.

“It says…”

She stopped.

“Say it.”

“It says the baby didn’t die because of the divorce stress.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

My cousin’s voice broke.

“She says there was something the doctors found.”

I gripped the phone.

“What did they find?”

Before my cousin could answer, I heard Amelia scream.

“Dad, tell Mom the truth!”

Then the phone went silent.

The call disconnected.

I stared at the screen.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

Then I grabbed my coat.

My three younger children were standing in the hallway, staring at me.

“Mommy?”

I wiped my tears.

“Stay with your grandmother.”

“But where are you going?”

I looked at them.

“To get your sister.”

I ran outside.

But before I reached my car, my phone rang again.

It was my cousin.

I answered immediately.

“Where is Amelia?”

“She’s safe.”

“What happened?”

“Your sister confessed.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“Confessed to what?”

My cousin took a deep breath.

“Ryan didn’t leave you because he suddenly fell in love with Claire.”

“Then why?”

“Because Claire gave him an ultimatum.”

I couldn’t speak.

“She told him she wouldn’t marry him unless he got rid of you completely.”

I felt a tear roll down my cheek.

“And the baby?”

Silence.

“What about my baby?”

My cousin whispered,

“That’s the part Amelia found out about.”

“What?”

“Your baby wasn’t just a tragedy.”

My cousin’s voice broke.

“There was a secret.”

“What secret?”

“She says Ryan knew something was wrong before you lost the baby.”

My entire body went numb.

“And he never told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

My cousin whispered the final words.

“Because he was afraid the truth would expose what he and Claire had done.”

I stared at my car.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

There was only one sentence:

“Your daughter has the original recording. If you want to know why you really lost your baby, don’t trust your mother.”

I looked back toward the house.

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered whether the person I’d trusted most had been protecting me—

or protecting them.
